DIRECTOR PHIL – BBC
Being Human is not an easy show to direct. You need a cool head to manage the complex storylines, tricky special effects and on-set tantrums (we’re looking at you Marcus Whitney). But fear not because Philip John is cool, calm and definitely in control.
Phil’s directing the second block of Being Human, consisting of episodes 3, 5 & 6. We caught up with the man himself to get his take on the new series and hear about a new guest star who’s put in a particularly good performance…

Brit hit ‘Being Human’ bows ahead of North American remake
Everyone wants to fit in. Humans are social creatures, and we like to feel that we’re welcome among others of our kind, that we belong. Nobody likes to feel excluded, on the edge of society, an outcast. Such is the premise of Being Human, the BBC comic drama about three roommates that really don’t fit into any human clique. Why? They’re a vampire, werewolf and ghost.Like a certain movie franchise that’s all the rage, these characters are desperate to integrate themselves into our world. Mitchell (Aidan Turner, The Tudors) is a 120-year-old vampire who has quit sucking blood cold turkey after a date with a female friend ended, well, badly. He works in a hospital alongside roomie George (Russell Tovey, The History Boys), who barks and yowls at the moon once a month. Annie (Lenora Crichlow, Sugar Rush) stays back at the flat. After all, she’s a ghost and is confined to the place where she died.

Strange bedfellows make BBC’s black comedy a hit – Winnipeg FreePress
‘I WAS going to die of old age,” agora phobic ghost Annie says at the outset of Being Human. “That was the plan.”
Plans have a way of going astray, though, as anyone who’s had dealings with vampires, ghosts and werewolves knows all too well. Being Human, a black comedy created for BBC Three by Doctor Who writer Toby Whithouse, was designed to be an eccentric hybrid of Friends and True Blood — “unnatural and supernatural, watching the dance from the sidelines,” as Annie, the hard-luck single woman and ghost, played by Lenora Crichlow, intones at her own wake. “You know the worst thing about being a ghost? It’s lonely.”
There’s just one thing for a lonely person to do: find a pair of compatible roommates and share a flat together. For Annie, that means throwing her lot in with Mitchell, a 20-something vampire — he’s actually 120 years old, but why stand on ceremony? — and George, a socially awkward werewolf, who’s a decent chap, really, once you get beneath all that hair. Together, Mitchell, played by Aidan Turner, George, played by Russell Tovey, and Annie navigate their way through life on the margins, trying to find meaning to their existence while confronting evildoers from the underworld.
